The map is an orientation aid, not a guarantee of accessibility. Follow signage and temporary closures. Gamla stan has cobblestones, slopes, and stairs; adjust the route according to your group.

1. Stortorget: start by looking at the whole area

Gather at the square before you start walking. Stortorget is Stockholm's oldest square, according to Visit Stockholm. Stand so that you can see both the colored facades and the Börshuset with the Nobel Prize Museum. Look at how different building widths and colors make the square more varied than it first appears.

Choose one detail to show the others: a window, a door, or a roof section. It is a simple observation game, not a task from our mystery. You do not need to enter any building. Any museum visits have their own opening hours and conditions.

2. Köpmantorget: follow Köpmangatan east

From Stortorget, walk along Köpmangatan towards Köpmantorget. Keep the square as the next goal on the map, so you do not have to try to remember several turns at once. Stop without blocking the street and compare the atmosphere here with the larger Stortorget.

On a self-guided walk, every stop does not need to be a history lesson. Notice how a small change in direction opens up a new view. If you want to delve deeper into the neighborhood's background, there are more resources in the guide to historical details in Gamla stan.

3. Brända tomten: give the small places time

Continue towards Brända tomten and use the map for the way between the squares. Here you can take a short stop and look at the shape of the area, the facades, and how the alleys meet. Let someone who does not usually hold the phone choose what you should examine more closely.

Stick to public walkways. Do not enter private courtyards or through gates to get a better picture. This is a living neighborhood with residents and businesses, not a backdrop for visitors.

4. Mårten Trotzigs gränd: choose according to the terrain

The next goal is Mårten Trotzigs gränd. The narrow alley is known as Stockholm's narrowest, and there are stairs here. Walk slowly and let oncoming people pass. If it is crowded or slippery, you can be satisfied with seeing the alley from one end.

If you need to avoid stairs, you can skip the passage and choose another way to Järntorget. This does not mean that the alternative route is controlled as being accessible. Check the conditions for your own needs.

5. Järntorget: end or take a break

End at Järntorget and go over what you noticed. Which stop made you slow down? Which place would you like to return to? Then choose whether you want to have a fika, continue walking, or end there.

Cafes and restaurants are separate businesses. Check current times and choose something that suits your budget. For more options before or after the walk, see the guide to things to do in Gamla stan.

Want a story to solve too?

A regular walk gives you places to discover. Mysteriet i Gamla Stan adds a fictional murder case, materials, and tasks that you solve together. The game has its own starting point and its own route; follow the booklet when you play and do not treat the stops in this article as clues.

With an online purchase, a physical booklet is sent. Order in advance, wait for the delivery, and bring a charged phone with internet for the Archive. Start with the practical guide before the mystery if you want to know what is needed before you choose.
